Poet, Janis Harrington

Janis Harrington is the author of Waiting for the Hurricane, winner of the 2017 Lena Shull Book Award.

Janis is an award-winning writer whose poems, stories, and nonfiction have appeared in a wide array of journals, anthologies, and magazines including Hermit Feathers Review, Kakalak, Midwestern Gothic, New Southerner Anthology, Snapdragon, and Flying South.

Writers of all levels of experience welcome

Participants will be guided to draw upon memory, family myths, and collective stories as a rich source of vivid, multi-layered poems. You’ll learn strategies for developing poems generated through proven prompts and exercises. Taking a close look at memory-driven poems by established poets, you’ll consider creative choices regarding voice, point of view, image, metaphor, irony, and form.

  • $10 for North Carolina Poetry Society members
  • $15 for non-members

Christ Episcopal Church (320 Pollock Street) Parish Hall—Important: enter at west door on Middle Street.

Free parking available on-street and in nearby municipal lots.
